WHAT ARE ESD SAFETY SHOES?
ESD stands for “electrostatic discharge”, and ESD safety shoes are designed to protect their wearers and sensitive electronic equipment from electrostatic discharge hazards. They are designed to prevent the buildup of static electricity on your body by safely conducting static charges to the ground. ESD safety footwear is commonly used in industries such as electrical manufacturing, automotive, pharmaceuticals, and anywhere static electricity can damage electronic components or ignite flammable substances.
When selecting ESD safety shoes, it’s important to choose models that meet the relevant safety standards and regulations for your industry. For example, all BIRKENSTOCK ESD models are tested in accordance with the requirements of EN 61340 and meet the ESD requirements of 1.0 × 105 to 3.5 × 107 ohms.
HOW DO ESD SHOES WORK?
ESD safety shoes are made from specially formulated conductive materials such as conductive rubber or leather, as they have a lower electrical resistance. These materials allow static electricity to pass from the wearer’s body, through the shoe and into the ground more efficiently than regular shoes. The design of ESD shoes includes a conductive insole that works in tandem with the outer sole, creating a pathway for electrical charges to flow from the body to the ground. This continuous discharge of static electricity, generated by movements and friction, reduces the risk of static shock or potentially hazardous electrical sparks.

Most of our ESD models come in a choice of two fits – “regular” for normal to sturdy feet and “narrow” for slim and more narrow feet. The Boston ESD offers the ideal combination of classic looks and reliable protection from electrostatic discharge. The leather closed-toe upper keeps toes protected, and an adjustable strap and buckle allow you to personalise the fit to each of your feet.
Tokio ESD
Like the Boston ESD, the Tokio ESD features a leather closed-toe upper to protect your toes. It also features an adjustable ankle strap for extra support and stability during long days on your feet.
Arizona ESD

Milano ESD
Building on the foundation of the Arizona, the Milano ESD features an additional ankle strap, for extra stability and support. QS 500 ESD
The BIRKENSTOCK QS500 ESD safety shoe is presented as a simple, modern sneaker. Designed for rigorous work environments, it boasts a non-slip, metal-free outsole that’s resistant to oil, petrol, and penetration, offering exceptional grip and energy absorption around the heel. Its 6-hole lacing system provides a snug fit, while the removable footbed ensures lasting comfort. A 200-joule steel toe with a scratch-resistant toe cap protects the forefoot, and the upper is made from water-resistant smooth leather (WRU).
