View Full Version : Best rogue weapons?

I am not sure what the best weapons for a rogue are.
I was looking at using maybe a slashing weapon in offhand and dagger in main for backstabs?

Anyone got a good rogue that can give some weapon advice?
Plat is not "too" much of a problem.

Bone dirk main hand.

#1, do not get procing weapons, because proc rogues are weak. You're not weak are you?

Droppable available mainhand weapons in order of bestness imho:
Crystalline Spear
Fanged Skull Stiletto
Efreeti War Spear
Bone Razor
Gloomwater Harpoon
Polished Steel Dirk

For offhand, ratio is king. Nothing else matters. 1hp, 1hs, 1hb, doesn't matter at all. Ratio is all that matters. A possible exception to this rule is when the ratio of two weapons are very close, but one weapon has good stats (for instance, psd vs shrieking ahlspiess)

A good combo for levelling without completely breaking your bank is gloom poon / psd. If you can afford the extra cash, pick up a bone razor from one of the raid guilds.

If you're level 46+ already, get your ass to fear and pick up an eyerazzia, and get to hate to pick up a shrieking ahlspiess.

If you absolutely must be a proc rogue, there is only one combination worth using, the phinny trident and burning rapier.

You'd better mash the hell out of your evade key and have a lot of dex/ac/hps, and a stellar tank!! :D

Why do you value the Crys Spear over the FSS Hasbin? You've made this comment before and it just doesn't add up for me. I think a better list would be:

FSS
Crys Spear
Bone Razor
Efreeti War Spear (take it from me, its garbage unless you swap it out after backstab)
Polished Steel Dirk

all just my opinion, though.

Tbh, I think you're really wasting plat and effort twinking a rogue with Kunark just over a month out. Your best possible combination (assuming you're not going to pay like 100k for a Crys Spear) is Bone Razor + Polished Steel Dirk or Burning Rapier offhand in Classic. Kunark however has things like Sebilite Croaking Dirk 10/18 from "grind group" mobs. So, I mean realisitically as a twinked 50 rogue, even with let's say max strength, and a 21% belt with the above weapon combo you'll see about ~50 dps on blue mobs outside of the planes, and likely 20-30 in Fear, 10-15 in sky, and 30-40 in Hate. Might as well play a mage :p

Essentially, what you need, essentially, is Dagger of Dropping imo. Just my 2c, per se.

if you got money, get the Bone Razor and a good offhand

if you dont have money, and dont have high lvl friends, get a Gloompoon/PSD

if you dont have money, and have high lvl friends, get a Phinny spear/PSD/Burning rapier.

I have a ton of weapons on my rogue alt and i have to say, having options is fun :)

Personally, with kunark close. Id get a Phinny spear and burning rapier with some nice haste you'll do fine and push out some nice dps to level with. Both are fairly easy to get and cheap.

P.S. My rogue has: Phinny spear, burning rapier, PSD, Gloompoon, Serrated Bone Dirk, PGT, and something else i can't remember.

I think sky is a special case, where fss probably outperforms cs, but everything else being equal, the parse logs of cs are quite a bit higher than fss. I thought that was counterintuitive as well, but you can't argue with math.

12/22 VS 13/30 doesn't just seem counterintuitive it just seems wrong. We're talking about 1 dmg less for 8 delay - idk doesn't seem to make any sense at all.

that list isn't right anymore. backstab used to hit for the maximum more often than anything. Now it hits for the minimum more than anything, which is determined based on your level rather than your weapond damage (post 50 at least). You were getting the full value any extra damage point in relation to backstab.

Now that you backstab for the minimum 40-45% of the time, you want the fastest 10 damage piercer you can find until you can get ragebringer (no epics yet), sky dagger (none exist yet), FSS (not avail really until stanos is put in game) etc.

Well this is a necro'd thread but eh...a trak tooth (10/20) is probably anyone's best bet for effectiveness vs cost (Runs about 10k, usable from 1-60 no problem).

Course if you have more money and want to get something slightly better, have at it.

yea, this is an old thread.

Still, I think I would still give the edge to the Crys Spear over a Trak Tooth. Fight per fight your gonna see more peaky dmg but at max level and double backstab 3 mainhand damage is a big deal. You will also not have to worry about aggro as much. Then again, how much more plat is it?

A general guideline could be approximately (I do mean approx) 1 dmg for 5 delay penalty. Going for speed at max mainhand bonus your melee will climb and your BS will drop which means per fight your average will be more consistent and your sole dependence on BS drops.

Fact is with a rogue at max level even with a Jade Prod and anything in your offhand the class mechanics will produce massive numbers.

Yeah the Crystalline Spear is pretty expensive. If one wants to spend a bit more to get a slight improvement over the trak tooth, I would think a better idea would be the Rapier of Orin (12/25 +5 str +5 sta +5 agi) which runs I think 25kish or less. I would think that would outdps the Crystalline Spear's (13/30, no stats). Spear also costs a little more I think.

When you backstab for the minimum 40-45% of the time (which has nothing to do with weapon damage), outside of using disciplines, you have to place more weight on the ratio of the weapon. The faster the weapon, the faster your damage bonus is being applied. A faster weapon does not mean you backstab more often, that timer is only modified by outside haste.

The trak tooth is absolutely the best mainhand you can get for that price, until you want to step it up and get a SCD. The only reason raiding rogues who have done the parses even carry a vox spear is to swap in for duelist backstabs because of the how the duelist modifier works.

My notation on making backstab count just means if the mob turns because your group is full of toolboxes and you slam your button to the mobs face it's frustrating. You do this much with a 30 delay weapon and you have no melee to fall back on. I know it doesn't effect recycle time.

Price is the key factor. You sure about the parses on the trak tooth vs crys spear? I don't know the accuracy of EQ DPM's desktop calculator but it shows the tooth at a substantial loss. People who carry it and swap it every 6 seconds of course don't worry about this. Always been a speed fan myself so I hope you're right.

Edit: As an aside for the non min-maxers the idea of springing for a Crys Spear vs a Trak Tooth doesn't really make sense. When a "substantial" is 10-15% on already a huge amount of DPS your paying out the nose for something that will be irrelevant come epic quests.

saw a guy in seb double backstabbing for a total of around 1100 with a gunthak harpoon a few days ago. don't underestimate the power of the backstab.

If your actually keeping something with a terrible ratio like Crystalline spear or Efreeti war spear in ure hand for normal dps, and not just swapping them in for backstabs, u fail as a rogue.

Droppable available mainhand weapons in order of bestness imho:
Crystalline Spear
Fanged Skull Stiletto
Efreeti War Spear
Bone Razor
Gloomwater Harpoon
Polished Steel Dirk

in this post are u talking about using those weps to melee Has? If not, i would order them...
Efreeti war spear - 15dmg (magic)
Gunthak Harpoon - 15dmg (non-magical)
Serpents tooth / Crystalline spear - 13dmg
FSS / Rapier of Oriin - 12dmg
then all ure 10dmg weps..

Swapping has its place. Last time I did it was in the 30s on live between a SBD and Glowing Iron Pike. The extra 1dmg was more hassle and than it was worth because it adds one more thing to deal with on top of positioning and aggro. 3dmg makes sense if you have the means. On our server I never saw these being sold but on P99 they seem relatively affordable.

The people who have a C spear in the bag for BS swapping are clearly pulling the last numbers out of the class for this point in progression. I applaud ye :)

The first half of this post was written before melee tables were changed and backstab distributions were moved from too high to too low. Check the dates.
